About Nasal Congestion

Everybody hates to have a stuffy nose as it makes it difficult to breathe especially when you are trying to sleep at night. Also known as nasal congestion, this breathing problem could happen to anyone and there are many reasons behind it. When you have a stuffy nose, the tissues and blood vessels must be swelling. The good news is, there are so much ways to treat nasal congestion and minimize its inconvenience.

How Nasal Congestion Occurs?

Irritation and swelling inside the nose results to congestion. There are many factors that could lead to this condition and one of those is humidity. If the level of humidity is low, your nasal membranes won't be able to produce the right amount of mucous. The passages will soon dry out due to lack of lubrication that causes the irritation and swelling. Humidity is lower as you breathe deeper on your sleep which makes the condition worse. Another rare reason of stuffy noses is deviated septum which could come from a birth defect or injury.

You may wonder why you are experiencing clogged nose whenever you are lying down. This is because gravity affects the nasal activities and the effects can be experienced on some lying positions. Lying on one side can drain the sinus and cause clogged nose. Sickness such as colds and fever can also cause nasal congestion. Another condition is allergic reactions to different stuffs around the affected person such as dust, pollen, bedding, laundry detergent and feather.

How to Treat a Clogged Nose?

The treatment may sometimes depend on the cause of nasal congestion. Medication, cleanliness, sleeping positions and surgeries in rare cases can solve the usual congestion problems. The first thing you may want to check is if the nasal congestion is caused by sickness or a condition such as colds. This can be treated by taking in paracetamol or decongestants. For those who have allergic reactions, antihistamines can be provided.

Nasal sprays is another effective solution for clogged nose however, you should not use this for more than 3-4 days. Consult your doctor to know more about sprays and to see if this kind of treatment would suit you. Steam exposure with the help of eucalyptus leaves also provides relief to those who have this kind of breathing problem. You just need to boil some eucalyptus in water and inhale the vapour that's rising from it. Standing, different sleeping position and massaging the face can be used as a temporary treatment for this annoying kind of condition.
