Five Ways To Straighten Your Teeth

By Harry Izzo

There are many ways dentists used to straighten teeth. There is a procedure for every problem people have with crooked teeth. Here are the options dental professionals are currently recommending.

By far the most widely used procedure is braces. These come in two styles: metal and invisible. Most everyone is familiar with metal braces. A more recent development is invisible braces. While metal braces can take a number of months to straighten your teeth, invisible braces take a lot less time. Metal braces can't be removed any time you want; you have to wait for your teeth to straighten to a certain point. Invisible braces on the other hand are removable and can be taken out of your mouth for eating and cleaning times. These braces are also hardly noticeable when standing in front of another person.

Aligners are an option somewhere in between metal and invisible braces. They are a sort of wall that is placed on either side of your teeth until they are straight. The front wall is invisible so others do not notice. They are mainly used for straightening the front teeth and many report them to be a bit uncomfortable to wear.

For chipped or unusually sharp teeth you can have your dentist install veneers. Veneers are small shells that are attached to the outside of your teeth and give them a nice shape. They cannot be removed because of this bonding, and they usually last only five to ten years.

Contouring is an alternative to porcelain veneers. With this procedure chipped teeth are given a better shape. Teeth that are too long compared to the others can be shortened to give you an even smile.

Finally, there is surgery to straighten your teeth. This procedure is expensive and mainly used when someone has a misaligned jaw bone. If any of the above treatments cannot be used in your situation then surgery may be the one your doctor recommends. Not only is it costly, but you will probably end up having to wear braces after all, when this procedure is completed. It takes a long time to see results when you have surgery done and this procedure is going to cost money!

Beauty is in the eye of the holder. Some people think crooked teeth ruin your looks while others think it adds to your charm. Be sure to weigh the pros and cons of each treatment and consult with your doctor to make sure the proper treatment is used so you'll have a smile you are happy with.
