Why People Prefer Dental Implants

By Harry Izzo

One of the physical attributes that most people tend to focus on is their teeth. Many of them blame their social problems on their lack of a good smile. As we get older, teeth get discolored, we lose them and / or we have accidents that damage them permanently. Your smile is important, because it acts just like a calling card. They are what most people use to form a first impression.

Many years ago when people lost their teeth and their only options were either dentures or bridges. While these temporarily fixed the issue, bridges were very hard to maintain. They were hard to floss and this increased the frequency of serious periodontal diseases. Bridges were not a permanent solution and they were the reason why people suffered from gum and bone diseases.

Dental implants came along and became the preferred treatment over bridges for this and many other reasons. They were a more permanent answer to a patient's problem. They were less costly because they needed to be replaced less often than bridges. One very important factor was that they were also made of much better material. With them you can enjoy eating, speaking, or chewing many years as if they were your natural set of teeth.

A very important aspect of dental implants is that they never decay. The surrounding teeth do not need crowns to secure them. This is completely different from wearing bridges. If the adjacent teeth have any sort of decay the bridge and the crown need to be replaced.

Dental implants can be expensive and most insurance policies don't cover them. The advantage to dental implants is that, if they are properly cared for and maintained, they can last for a very long time. The cheaper solution is bridges, but their life expectancy is about 10 years maximum. So if you're going to invest your hard-earned money you might as well get implants. They are a better investment of your time and money and they have a very high success rate.

Except for diabetics and chain smokers, dental implants are suitable for all patients. Diabetics and smokers have a lower supply of blood in the mouth and it makes it difficult for their implants to fuse with the jawbone.

Be sure that your dentist specializes in cosmetic dentistry to ensure your results are successful.
