Why is Speech Therapy Important?

By Eunice Helman

The way we talk has a very big impact in our lives. It is not noticeable but how we communicate has an effect on our relationship with others. Because it feels typical and natural, our speech is just one of the things we usually take for granted. What we fail to notice is that not all people are blessed with this gift. Certain people are born with speech impairments while others only get them from accidents. The bottom line is that these people are not blessed enough to enjoy the gift of speech permanently. Fortunately, speech therapy was designed in order to aid unfortunate people like them.

One aspect of medicine that deals with the improvement of speech and language conditions is called speech therapy. Like all kinds of disabilities, there are lots of different types of speech and language defects. These disorders are analyzed and addressed by specialists called speech and language therapists (SLT). There is no overnight fix for speech defects. Like most therapies, it is a continuous procedure. Patients have to visit their therapists at least two times a week until they can function as normally as possible.

SLTs have increasingly been in demand in the recent years. Unlike a teacher or a doctor that can only practice in school or in the medical centers, SLT's are not restricted to just one work environment. They can practice in healthcare facilities, schools, health centers, or perhaps even in their patient's houses. In reality, they can even be employed in several different companies. I even know a person that is hired by both medical facilities, health centers, and home service. Speech therapists can also decide to be self-employed, so they can work on their own time.

Speech therapy is not an easy career. It takes a great deal of diligence and perseverance, as the majority of your clients have other more severe afflictions. In order to last in this profession, you would need to be dedicated in what you do. Not all speech therapists are calm and collected. Those that are just in it for the money may even be aloof and won't even care if the clients are improving or not. You should therefore make sure to select a therapist that is both educated and passionate about his or her career. A pleasant and collected attitude is also a plus.

Our gift of speech is something that we frequently take for granted. We forget that there are individuals that aren't lucky enough to be offered the same gift. Luckily, speech therapy enables these people to in some way have the capacity to communicate as normally as possible. Not only are their oral capabilities enhanced but their self-esteem are also boosted. Nevertheless, due to the fact that not all therapists can be passionate and persistent with their clients, it is essential to be vigilant in deciding on the therapist to deal with.
