How A Doctor Of Chiropractic Treats Lower Back Pain

By Thommas M Tommas

Approximately 22 million Americans annually make at least one visit to a chiropractor. More than one-third of these people are seeking relief of discomfort for different areas of their back. Lower back pain is a particularly common condition and may be caused by sports injuries, muscle strain, accidents, or stress. As healthcare professionals, chiropractors are qualified to perform spinal manipulations that align spinal structures and restore mobility to the back.

Spinal adjustments, performed by hand align areas of the musculoskeletal structure of the body. The objective is to allow the body to heal itself without the need for medication or surgery. Spinal manipulative therapy restores joint mobility that has been restricted by tissue injury. It is an alternative form of treatment for pain and quality of life issues and may be used in conjunction with traditional medical treatment provided by another healthcare practitioner.

At the onset of treatment, the chiropractor obtains the patient's medical history and conducts a physical examination. In many cases, diagnostic imaging or laboratory tests are performed to determine whether chiropractic treatment is appropriate for the low back discomfort being experienced. Once warning signs are ruled out, the chiropractor will then make manual adjustments to the joints as needed.

The Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics notes scientific research regarding the biochemistry of discs of the spine. With proper joint motion there is removal of fluid and waste from spinal discs and improved nutrient flow into these discs. Motion is required to keep the discs of the spine healthy because they do not receive a direct supply of blood. If motion decreases, so does the sulfate, glucose, proteoglycan, and oxygen content. These chemical substances are essential for healthy spinal discs.

Spinal manipulation is characterized by a sudden and controlled force that improves the quality and range of motion of the spine. The process is safe and particularly effective for acute pain in the lower back. Some chiropractors supplement spinal adjustments with recommendations regarding exercise, rehabilitation, and nutrition. Diet and exercise affect overall health, which can have an impact on spinal health.

In addition to the discomfort noted, lower back pain can be aggravating because it may limit daily activities. Once lower back pain begins getting treatment as soon as possible will provide much-needed relief and ongoing chiropractic care can prevent a one-time occurrence from becoming a chronic situation. Chiropractic treatment is based on the correct diagnosis of the back pain and requires an understanding of patient health history including knowledge of what caused the pain.
