What A Tummy Tuck Procedure Involves

By Bernard Miner

An abdominoplasty is sometimes referred to as a 'tummy tuck', which is a name that better describes this surgical procedure. The surgery ensures that excess skin and fat is removed from the lower and mid-abdominal area of the body, which may have been caused by major weight loss or pregnancy. It gets rid of loose or sagging skin, and tightens the muscles and fascia of the abdominal wall.

The procedure is only used by persons who have a large quantity of sagging or extra skin around their abdomen area. The skin may be overhanging, and may not be in proportion with the rest of the body. The procedure is also effective in firming weakened muscles, or in repairing separated muscles.

The patient will be thoroughly examined before surgery begins, and before the doctor even recommends it. The abdominoplasty may be affected by several things. For example, if the patient still wishes to have a baby, if there are scars from other surgeries, the condition of the muscles and the amount of extra skin to be removed.

The type of surgery recommended will depend on various factors, as the results of the abdominoplasty will vary due to specific conditions. The surgery may be less effective if the patient has scarring from other surgeries conducted in the past. A full examination will be done by the doctor to determine the muscles' condition, and to see the extent of extra skin to be removed.

A full abdominoplasty will involve two incisions. The first is above the pubic region, while the second is at the naval, in order to detach the naval from the skin holding it in place. The surgeon will now take the skin away from the abdominal wall so that he can operate on the relevant muscles and fascia.

Now the surgeon will work on the area revealed, by using sutures, and will then take out the unwanted skin and fat. The area is hereby tightened. The opening is closed, and the naval is sutured in the correct position on the abdomen.

Liposuction may also be part of the surgery. This smooths the abdominal area. The patient may require a compression garment after surgery, wound dressings and a drainage tube for excess fluids.

A tummy tuck can be full or partial procedure. There is also a surgery referred to as an extended abdominoplasty, or the surgeon will recommend a combination of procedures. The patient will usually take between one and four weeks to heal, but recovery time depends on the type of surgery that was used and the problems that were corrected.
