Pharmacy Technician Salary: How Good Is It?

By Bradly Fellhauer

One of the reasons why a number of people think about pursuing a career as a pharmacy technician is because of the good salary. The thing here is that this career has a high level of competition and this means you have to become ahead of the pack if you want to be worthy of a high pharmacy technician salary. You'll need to become more competitive and proficient as a pharmacy tech.

According to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average pharmacy technician salary is $14.10 per hour and $29,300 per year. If you're wondering which industries pay pharmacy technicians the most, these are the Federal Executive Branch, Management, Scientific, and Technical Consulting Services, and Colleges, Universities, and Professional Schools.

A higher pharmacy technician salary can be expected by those who have acquired certification from the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or the Institute for the Certification of Pharmacy Technicians (ICPT). It is also not uncommon for employers to prefer hiring pharmacy technicians that have acquired ICPT or PTCB certification. Certification greatly enhances the job prospects of a pharmacy tech.

Your educational background also has a great impact on how much pharmacy technician salary you can be entitled to. While it is true that you don't need to undergo formal training in order to become a pharmacy tech, you can have better credentials by seeking education from community colleges, vocational schools, and hospitals which offer accredited training programs.

Another factor that can dictate the amount of pharmacy technician salary you receive is your work experience. Of course it is but natural for a pharmacy tech that has 5 years experience to have a higher salary than one who is just working for a few months. If you can manage to get more work experience and continuing education, you may also be promoted to higher positions and get higher salary.

By applying in prestigious pharmaceutical firms, it is also very much likely that you can receive a higher pharmacy technician salary. This may not be easy though as you should have a very impressive resume to even be accepted to high-paying employment opportunities. This is the reason why having formal training and certification is important before you start seeking any pharmacy tech jobs.
