Important Dental Care Tips Everyone Must Know

By Harry Izzo

Statistics report that visiting a dentist two times a year is enough for most people. Some people can even get away with fewer visits with the dentist, providing they have teeth in excellent health. People who are not at risk of having cavities or suffering from gum disease very rarely need to make an appointment with their dentist.

People that are high risk patients however need to visit a dentist every three or four months and sometimes more often than that. High-risk patients include smokers, diabetics, and anyone who suffers from a weak immunity system. These kinds of patients are prone to dental disease, that's why they need to see a dentist more often. They are more susceptible to bacterial infection, plaque build-up which in time causes cavities.

We should all take good care of our teeth by watching what we eat. If you're someone that smokes or drinks black tea and lots of red wine, be on the lookout for the discoloring of your teeth. The kinds of foods with a dark rich color are known for staining the teeth. After eating these kinds of foods, it's a good idea to pick up your toothbrush and give your mouth a good cleaning. Another remedy is to eat something that has a cleansing effect like an apple, to rid your teeth of these staining elements.

Change your toothbrush often. Using an old toothbrush means that you're transferring accumulated bacteria into your mouth. Change your brush at least every three months. Brush at 45 degree angles against the gum and brush in a circular motion rather than straight up and down or back and forth. And don't scrub too hard; this may hurt your gums.

Don't forget to clean your tongue when you are through brushing your teeth. You might also want to invest in a small tongue scraper. Either method will help clean away the bacteria build-up on the tongue that causes bad breath.

Apples, carrots, celery and even popcorn have lots of teeth-cleaning properties. Be sure to incorporate them especially when you're eating your main meal. These foods also have vitamin C which is an important teeth straightener because it holds our cells together. Vitamin C also helps fight gum disease.

Finally, to reduce the odor in your mouth brought on by the buildup of bacteria, chew fresh herbs like mint, parsley and cilantro. Seeds, for example sesame seeds, help fend off plaque and help strengthen your tooth enamel.
