Why Patient Education Handouts Are Important To Health Services

By Jaclyn Hurley

People now live longer than ever before and medical science has reached a point where it seems as if new discoveries are made on a daily basis. Many fatal diseases have been conquered. Unfortunately, medical practitioners still deal with people that waited too long before seeking medical help or people that lead such unhealthy life style that they seem to invite disease. Patient education handouts can achieve much in the line of helping people to live healthier lives.

One of the most important aims of pamphlets dealing with health issues is to prevent disease. People need to know that their habits such as smoking or drinking have a negative effect upon their health. They also need to know what they can do to prevent disease. Information about diets, exercise and safe sex, for example, can therefore have far reaching positive effects and may inspire at least some people to live a healthier life.

Many people suffer from a variety of symptoms without realizing that they may have a disease. In this instance educational pamphlets can also play a very important role. If people are aware of which symptoms to look out for, they may seek medical help early enough for the disease to be diagnosed early. Of course, the earlier a disease is diagnosed, the easier it is to treat.

Another way in which educational leaflets can be extremely valuable is in educating people about the importance of using medication correctly. Most medical practitioners will testify that a large percentage of their patients simply do not follow instructions, such as eating before taking medicine or taking medication at specific times. In this way they may be endangering their health and rendering the treatment less effective. Pamphlets can go a long way in detailing the dire consequences of abusing medication.

Most pamphlets, especially those issued by public health authorities are in a printed format. This makes sense because it is certainly no use to publish important information on the internet, for example, if a large percentage of the target group does not access to the internet. Printed material is easy to distribute and people are much more likely to read them and to even keep them.

Information pamphlets should be designed with great care. The content should be aimed at well defined target groups and it is vital to avoid technical terminology and complicated wording. In most cases the pamphlet will be more effective if simple graphics are used to illustrate all the main points. Where possible, readers should be told where they can go to obtain more information about the topic in hand.

The value and importance of educating the general public about health issues simply cannot be overemphasized. When people are aware of how their life styles influence their health, they may make changes. Many people may be motivated to seek medical help if they realize that they symptoms from which they suffer are potentially dangerous. In this way lives can be saved and the pressure on the health system can be lessened.

Information on health issues should not be available at medical facilities only. In most cases, the intended target group will not be reached in this manner. Rather, efforts should be made to make such information available at places where the intended target group is likely to go, such as shopping centers, government offices, pharmacies and even at pubs and clubs.
