Don't Have Your Teeth Whitened Until You Read This

By Harry Izzo

A person can have a perfect set of teeth -- perfectly straight, shaped nicely and intrinsically healthy. But even people with perfect teeth sometimes suffer from having stained teeth. Over time smokers and coffee & tea drinkers advance the wear on their teeth.

Stained teeth can cause one's self-confidence and self-esteem to plummet. Fortunately, cosmetic dentistry makes it easier for people to get the bright sparkling teeth they desire.

The procedure is popularly known as teeth whitening. This is a godsend for patients with discolored teeth. Discoloring results from the food we eat, smoking, your genes or natural aging. Before bleaching your teeth, all major dental issues must be addressed. Before the procedure begins you will need to consult with your dental practitioner to uncover the presence of tooth decay and or gum sensitivity.

If you have any cavities, they must be treated. The integrity of your cavity fillings is important because the whitening solution must be prevented from reaching certain areas within the tooth. Make sure you give your teeth a thorough cleaning to remove any food particles and rid your mouth of bacteria.

There are two kinds of bleaching or teeth whitening procedures. You can take home a customized kit or you can have laser treatment at the dentist's office.

Included in the home kit are a mouth guard and teeth whitening solution. The mouth guard is first filled with the solution and then placed in your mouth. All corners of your teeth should be covered with the whitener for an even color. It will take a number of hours each day, for a couple of weeks, for you to get the shade you want.

Most people think that teeth whitening is permanent, but it is not. Drinking dark colored liquids and smoking cigarettes will surely stain your teeth again. How long your teeth stay white depends on your daily habits. Exposing your teeth to elements that can discolor them will take its toll on them.

If teeth whitening is not suitable for your mouth, you can opt for veneers. Veneers can be used to cover up teeth that are severely stained. You have several dental solutions available to you.
