Is There A Need For Psychiatry In Apex

By Linda Ruiz

Apex is a small town in Wake County, North Carolina. It is a suburb of Raleigh, the state capital. As of the 2012 census, the population was estimated at 40,420. The population density is just over 2,400 per square mile. Compare this to that of New York City, New York, at 27,778, or Albuquerque, New Mexico, which is just a little less than 3,000 per square mile. While not exactly a backwater or one-horse town, the area has a distinct rural character and is well-served by park area. Because of the low population density and the solid connection with nature, it seems reasonable to surmise that there is only a token requirement for psychiatry in Apex.

The "Peak of Good Living, " as it is known, gets its name from its position on that section of the Chatham Railroad that connects Richmond, VA, with Jacksonville, FL. Apart from a series of devastating fires, the town's population grew steadily, rising to 20,000 in the 1990s. Today, it houses a significant shopping center and the crossroads of two highways, 55 and 64.

Fred G. Bond Park, or Bond Park, is one of the largest parks in Wake County and the largest municipal park adjacent to Apex. It harbors several athletic fields and has 4.2 miles of dedicated trails. A man-made lake is encircled by one such trail that is a favorite among cyclists and joggers. The lake is also popular with boaters and fishermen. Bond Park is slightly northeast of Apex itself.

Despite the fact that Thomas E. Brooks Park is attributed to the town of Cary, NC, northeast of Apex, the park is actually equidistant between the two. The park consists of 224 acres of beautiful, scenic countryside. Visitors have commented that it is a great place to pick up basketball games and such.

The branch of medicine concerned with preventing, diagnosing and treating mental health problems is called psychiatry. The three main categories of mental health problems are disorders of cognition, problems with perception, mood disorders like anxiety and depression, and thought disorders, such as schizophrenia.

Psychiatry is the German expression for, "medical treatment of the soul." The type of medical doctor who specializes in psychiatry are called psychiatrists. These doctors need to have a handle on the biological and social sciences as well as in-depth knowledge of medicine. Psychiatric disorders may be divided into severe learning disabilities, personality disorders and mental illnesses.

A mental disorder is an anomaly that causes functional impairment or suffering of the subject or those close to them. The scientific study of mental disorders is called psychopathology. Designating an individual as a psychopath requires more finesse than noting that they have taken your parking place in the supermarket.

Personality disorders are a different type of disorder from mental disorders, although it is difficult for the lay person to distinguish between the two. A nut case is a nut case, right? Not really. A personality disorder has a number of different components; namely, behavioral, cognitive and something known as "inner experience." A person is diagnosed with a personality disorder if their condition disrupts their social or occupational functioning.
