A quality first-aid kit is essential. It should include band aids, aspirin and other pain relievers, antacids, antibiotics, scissors, tape, gauze, a thermometer and a cold pack. A good first aid guide and any medications taken by your family members should also be included. Communication devices are also necessary. Consider a two-way radio, a regular battery or solar radio, and cell phones with battery chargers. Extra batteries will also be needed.

Those who live in areas with harsh winters or heavy rains will need more adequate shelter than those who reside in warm or tropical states. The type of emergency will determine whether you must leave your home or not. If you do, you will need a tent or at the very minimum, a large tarp, rope and stakes. Blankets and sleeping bags are also needed. A company that specializes in preparing for disasters will have special blankets that hold in the warmth much more efficiently.
