Building The Learning Community Using Instructional Rounds

By Janine Hughes

The education system uses this kind of strategy for the purpose of school improvement. Instructional rounds involves bringing groups of educators together to look at what is happening in their schools. Through this they will be able to create a collaborative learning environment and improve student learning. This is brought about by teachers improving their skills.

Each teacher ought to participate in this activity once a semester. Rounds ought to be made possible by a lead teacher. This is basically someone who is respected and considered exceptional in the way they teach. The administrator of an institution may also decide to lead this activity. It should be noted that this rounds are not meant to evaluate teachers being observed.

This activity can be voluntary. At times other teachers are suggested to be available during this activity. Those teachers considered to have exceptional skill can also be involved. They will be involved and could be the main subject of interest. Beneficial traits of teaching can be obtained from them. Their students more often perform well.

Working with large numbers can prove difficult so consider working with few people. Five teachers is a good number to start with. There is always a lead singer involved here. However, he or she is not among the five teachers. On the day when teachers will be networking, students need to be aware of what will take place. They will be told on what the staff has planned for that day.

It is important for teachers to be courteous enough when in front of these students. They should start by knocking then entering the scheduled class. They should position themselves appropriately and avoid interrupting the learning that will be going on. Their work will be to look at the teacher during their teaching session. They should also take down what impresses them.

There could be specific problem areas that an institution may work on. A lot of focus can be put in these areas. This observation activity will note take the whole day. It can involve a short period of less than half an hour. One is not allowed to give points to their partners in a manner which you could be grading them. They will eventually orderly move out when their time is up.

After this activity, teachers normally convene to check on their experiences. Each teacher can comment on what they noted. This is referred to as debriefing. Observers are not supposed to share what he or she has observed with anyone from outside the particular group of observers. They must not offer leading suggestions to the specific observed teachers unless asked for feedback.

This is an amazing opportunity for teachers to observe and interact with their colleagues in a non-evaluative way. The teachers who do the observing benefit a lot. They are able to borrow skills from those who are employing them effectively. They will also be able to look at their own teaching practices in light of what they will have observed thus helping the student. Children are the future hence they should be given the best education.
