Helpful Yoga Tips

By Sienna Nalin

Yoga is a very good method to keeping yourself stress free while strengthening your body. If you are trying yoga for the first time, there are a few things that you should know so that you won't feel uncomfortable of anything like that.

Be on time: Actually, you should arrive early so that you can find a nice spot to lay your mat. Coming late you may be pushed to the back of the class.

There might be chanting: Depending on where you take yoga, there might be some Sanskrit chanting at the start or at the end of class. If you're not comfortable with this, there's no pressure to take part. Simply relax, breathe, and keep an open mind.

Be loose: When going to yoga, the number one thing is to be loose. If you go in and are not loose and are clenching every body part, you won't be able to release stress and have a good experience.

Breath is everything: Pay attention to how shallow your breath is at the beginning of class, and if it's deeper and more relaxed at the end of class. When you feel your mind wander, think about lengthening your inhales and exhales. It's the best way to calm down and dive back into your practice with a fresh outlook.

Your instructor will not lead you wrong: Your teacher is there to help you experience total calmness and relaxation from taking yoga. They are not there to guide you in the wrong direction at all. Some instructors may also touch students to help them get in the correct position, if you do not like this; it is ok to inform them not to.
