Central Components: Cosmetic Eye Shadow

By Haywood Hunter

Cosmetic eye shadow is a product applied in the space between the eyebrows and eyelids. It is a form of makeup that is typically worn to make the eyes appear more attractive and stand out on the face. The product is made and sold by many companies, and comes in a range of textures and colors.

The product is capable of adding depth and dimension to an eye. It may also be worn to draw attention to the eyes by complementing the eye color, making it pop. Most are made using mica or powder. Although some come in a liquid, mousse or pencil formula.

This type of makeup is worn in civilizations all over the world. Generally, it is worn by females, but it may also be worn by men as well. In western societies, the product is known as feminine, though men may wear it as well. Most women have a larger gap between their eyebrows and eyelashes than men do.

More often than not, eye shadow is applied in an effort to improve the appearance of an individual. Essentially, it tries to mimic the natural shadow created on the eyes. Plays and other theatrical performances often utilize this type of makeup to add a dramatic effect, using non-traditional colors, textures and patterns.

Shadow can be applied in many different ways. How this is done depends greatly on the formulation or the desired appearance. Small brushes or fingertips are commonly used for application. An important step in applying the makeup is blending it well. Eye makeup remover and wipes, baby oil and face washing are effective ways to remove the product from the skin.

This type of makeup can be purchased at many different stores. A technician and a makeup store may even offer advice on how to apply the product and what shades work first for a specific skin tone. Some individuals use several different shades on their eyelid to create various effects, or incorporate colors from their outfit. There is no standard way on how to wear this.

Cosmetics date far back. In fact, eye shadow goes as far back as 10,000 BC, when the Egyptians regularly carried out burials. In Egypt, oils and ointments have long been used to treat skin. Likewise, paints and dyes have been used to change the appearance of the body and hair. Egyptians, both men and women, use henna to stain their nails, rouged their lips and cheeks, and used kohl to line their eyes and eyebrows. Greeks also used cosmetics early on. They are known for using glosses, dye, powders, perfumes and eye shadows. The Romans dabbled in cosmetics, they used face paint to ward off evil eyes and utilized oils, gums and resins for medicinal, cosmetic and religious purposes.

Many eye shadows today are made using preservatives, mica, magnesium stearate and sericite. Talc is used as a filler. Dry binders are done with magnesium stearate, and liquid binders utilize silicone. There must be a balance between liquid binders, dry binders and fillers to create this makeup. Once the correct formula has been found, it can be pressed and the cosmetic eye shadow is made. As is the case with other products, quality will vary by manufacturer.
