Why Flossing Is Essential

By Chet Sandeksi

Millions of Americans suffer from halitosis, or bad breath. In fact, that number is hovering right around forty million Americans who are suffering from the embarrassing and at times debilitating consequence of having bad breath.

But there is hope for you if you are one of these forty million Americans with bad breath, and your dentist in Lincoln, NE, wants you to know that there are ways for you to have fresher breath. For many, the tips to gaining fresher breath may not come as a surprise, nor should they, because many of them are centered on simply keeping up with quality dental care.

Dentists know that on average, people do not brush their teeth for long enough. Most people brush their teeth at night for less than one minute, which is far lacking from the suggested two minute mark that is recommended by most dentists.

By choosing to brush one's teeth and floss more regularly, an individual can take the steps they need to in order to have fresher breath more frequently.

Brushing, and especially flossing, help to freshen breath due to the fact the one of the major culprits of bad breath is decaying and old food matter that is still remaining in the persons mouth.

As gross as it may sound, the truth is that most people who do not brush and floss regularly will have food particles leftover in their warm and humid mouths that will start to rot and grow bacteria which can produce a foul order to emanate from a person's mouth. By simply resolving to remove these food particles from the mouth through brushing and flossing, a person can instantly see improvement in the halitosis.

If this simple act of brushing and flossing more regularly does not help to largely eradicate your halitosis, other measures can be taken. One additional step to oral care that may help to eliminate bad breath is to scrape your tongue.

The tongue in the mouth collects bacteria just like the teeth in the mouth do, and with the collection of bacteria almost inevitably comes the bad order of halitosis. By scraping your tongue while or after brushing and flossing your teeth, a person will be able to eliminate that bacteria build up on the tongue and thereby eliminate a large contributor to their bad breath.

Dentists also recommend that their patients brush twice a day as well. This will help to remove the plaque on your teeth more effectively and more quickly as regular brushing cleans up little messes, as it were, instead of waiting to clean up a giant dental mess.

Being aware of dry mouth and taking steps to rectify it can help a person prevent tooth decay in the future and help to curb bad breath in the present. One effective way of inducing saliva in the mouth is by chewing sugar free gum.

By taking these steps to halt bad breath, a person will be able to enjoy greater oral health and less halitosis.
