Gymnastics is a form of sport currently practiced for different reasons. People engage in this sport in order to compete in local and international competitions and to take part in special military operations. Some individuals engage in it as a hobby during their leisure time while others endeavor to achieve body fitness and maintain physical, mental, and psychological health. Gymnastics in Delaware is highly developed because gymnasts are trained by qualified coaches. This makes them among the best in the world.

The term gymnastics has its origin in the Greek language. When translated into the English language it means to practice naked. In old Greece, the term was used on all exercises performed in gymnasiums. Gymnasiums were places where male athletes exercised without clothes. The exercises were included in Olympics during competitions. Currently, some of those exercises have been separated into completely different fields.

As a sport, a lot of physical strength, coordination, agility, power, flexibility, and body balance are required. There is an international body that sets and enforces standards in gymnastics although every state may have its own governing body. The local governing body normally has affiliations to the worldwide authority. Artistic gymnastics is the most well known category of this sport.

This sport comprises training up to different levels. The lowest competitive level that has been sanctioned in the US is level 5. Lower levels except level 4 are viewed as being non-competitive and competitions are not held in such levels. Demonstration of a mastery of all skills in level 4 and the other lower levels is required before one proceeds to competitive levels. As such, gyms may hold competitions to test ability in kids in level 4. Level 4 simply familiarizes and prepares kids for competitions.

Artistic gymnastics include events for both men and women. Events practiced by women include balance beams, vault, floor exercise, and uneven bars. On the other hand, those for men include high bar, parallel bar, vault, still rings, pommel horse, and floor exercises. Some events are done by single participants while others require team effort to accomplish. Others can also be done by individuals as well as a team. All the events named above are improvements from the exercises practiced in the Ancient Greece.

Gymnastic is comprised of many disciplines in which participants may participate. Trampolining, tumbling, team gym, and aerobatic, rhythmic, and acrobatic gymnastics are among the major disciplines available. The sport allows participants from different age groups with some being as young as 2 years. Difficulty increases with individual ability and age. The routines are physically exhausting although they take a short period of time. Participants are tested for endurance, strength, awareness of limits, and flexibility.

Some disciplines in this sport are strictly meant for women. For example, men cannot participate in rhythmic events at a competitive level. Participants are generally given a lot of freedom in the sport. Most of the individual and team exercises are selected by the participants although a few are compulsory. During performances, individuals can execute any move they find comfortable to.

Previously the scores used to be made out of 10 points. This has however changed and participants can now earn as many points as possible. Marks are awarded according to factors such as completeness, accuracy, and difficulty.
